Brake service & repair at DAVID's Auto Care in Sioux Falls
The short version

Brakes are the one system on your vehicle where waiting is not a financial decision. It is a safety decision, and it usually turns into a financial one anyway, because pads worn to the backing take the rotors with them.

We measure the pad thickness in millimeters against the minimum the manufacturer allows, and photograph what we find. If you have life left, we tell you so and see you at the next service.

What you are noticing

Symptoms we see

Squealing when you brake

Most pads have a wear indicator designed to squeal. It is a warning, not a failure. This is the cheap moment to act.

Grinding

Usually metal on metal. The pad material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the rotor. Waiting past this gets expensive fast.

Soft or sinking pedal

Air or fluid in the system, a failing master cylinder, or a leak. This one gets looked at immediately.

Pulling to one side when stopping

Often a sticking caliper or a collapsed hose, so one wheel is doing more work than the others.

Shaking through the pedal

Rotor thickness variation. The pad is grabbing unevenly as the rotor turns.

How we handle it

The process

  1. Measure, do not guess

Pad thickness gets measured in millimeters and rotors get checked against minimum specification. Numbers, not opinions.

  2. Inspect the whole system

Calipers, slides, hoses, lines and fluid. A new set of pads on a seized caliper is money thrown away.

  3. Show you what we found

Photos of the actual pads on your actual vehicle, before any recommendation. Ask for the measurements and you will get them, and we will show you the old parts when you pick the vehicle up.

  4. Replace, bed in, road test

Quality parts, proper bedding procedure, and a road test before it goes back to you.

Questions
How do I know if I need new brakes?

Squealing is the early warning. Grinding means you are past it. A soft pedal or pulling to one side means come in now. If you are not sure, we will measure them and tell you the number, and if they are fine we will tell you that too.

Do rotors always need replacing with pads?

No. If a rotor is above minimum thickness and the surface is in good condition, it can often stay. We measure rather than assume, because replacing rotors that did not need it is an easy way to pad a bill.

Why are my brakes squealing right after they were replaced?

New pads sometimes need bedding in, and some pad compounds are noisier than others. If it persists, bring it back. Noise after a brake job is worth a second look, not a shrug.

How long does a brake job take?

Most are same day when we have the parts on hand. We will give you a realistic timeline with the estimate rather than after.
